According to industry guidelines published by PCI Magazine and Charles Ross & Son Company, the high-speed disperser operates most effectively in the viscosity range of 1,000–50,000 cps — covering the vast majority of standard paint and coating formulations. For higher viscosity mill bases and specialty coatings, multi-shaft mixing is required:

High-Speed Disperser
The high-speed disperser is the standard production machine for the paint and coatings industry worldwide. Its toothed disc blade rotates at tip speeds of 1,000–1,500 rpm, generating intense turbulent flow and hydraulic shear that rapidly incorporates pigments, fillers and additives into the liquid vehicle — breaking down agglomerates and producing a uniform, stable dispersion without grinding media.

Multi-Shaft Mixer
For high-viscosity mill bases, paste coatings and specialty formulations that exceed the working range of a single-shaft disperser, the multi-shaft mixer combines a central high-speed dispersing shaft with one or more low-speed anchor or helical agitators. This combination ensures thorough bulk movement of high-viscosity material while maintaining high shear dispersion at the disc — eliminating dead zones and delivering consistent quality even in dense, paste-like formulations.
