Chemical Industry Mixer

High-Speed Dispersers & Multi-Shaft Mixers for Chemical Manufacturing

The chemical industry encompasses one of the broadest and most demanding ranges of mixing applications in manufacturing. From low-viscosity solvent-based formulations to ultra-high-viscosity resins and pastes, achieving consistent dispersion, homogenisation and reaction efficiency depends entirely on selecting the correct mixing equipment. LRMIX high-speed dispersers, multi-shaft mixers and ribbon blenders cover the full viscosity spectrum of chemical production — from pigment dispersion at a few hundred centipoise to sealant compounding at over 1,000,000 cP.

Chemical Applications Requiring Industrial Mixing Equipment

Chemical manufacturers require different mixing technologies depending on the nature of their product. Understanding which mixing mechanism suits which application is the first step in selecting the right equipment.

Paints & Coatings Pigment dispersion into resin carriers, binder emulsification, additive incorporation — the core process in architectural, industrial and automotive coating production
Resins & Polymers Epoxy resin compounding, polyester resin blending, alkyd resin formulation — high-viscosity materials requiring powerful multi-shaft mixing with vacuum degassing
Adhesives & Sealants Structural adhesives, construction sealants, hot-melt formulations and pressure-sensitive adhesives — viscosities ranging from 10,000 cP to over 2,000,000 cP
Agrochemicals Pesticide emulsions, herbicide suspensions, fertiliser slurries and wettable powder formulations requiring stable dispersion of active ingredients
Rubber & Plastic Compounds Carbon black dispersion, compound blending, masterbatch preparation and functional filler incorporation into polymer matrices
Specialty Chemicals Electronic pastes, thermal interface materials, UV-curable formulations, fire-retardant compounds and other technically demanding chemical products

Matching Mixer to Viscosity: The Key Selection Principle

In chemical processing, viscosity is the primary factor determining which mixer type is appropriate. Using the wrong mixer for a given viscosity range leads to poor dispersion quality, excessive energy consumption and shortened equipment life.

Viscosity RangeRecommended EquipmentTypical Chemical Applications
500 – 50,000 cPHigh-Speed Disperser (single shaft)Water-based paints, solvent inks, light adhesives, agrochemical emulsions
50,000 – 500,000 cPDual-Shaft Mixer (disperser + anchor)High-solid coatings, paste adhesives, filled resins, sealant bases
500,000 – 5,000,000 cPTriple-Shaft / Multi-Shaft MixerStructural adhesives, epoxy compounds, thick sealants, battery electrode slurries
Dry Powder / Free-flowingHorizontal Ribbon BlenderPowder coatings, chemical premixes, filler blends, granule mixtures
💡 Process Note: High-Speed Disperser + Multi-Shaft Mixer

In many chemical production lines, a high-speed disperser handles the initial pigment or filler wetting and deagglomeration stage, while a multi-shaft mixer manages the subsequent high-viscosity compounding step. This two-stage approach maximises both dispersion quality and production efficiency. LRMIX supplies both equipment types and can advise on combined process configurations.

LRMIX Mixing Equipment for Chemical Production

High-Speed Disperser

The standard workhorse of liquid-phase chemical mixing. A toothed Cowles-type blade rotates at tip speeds of 15–25 m/s, generating intense shear that wets out and deagglomerates solid particles into the liquid carrier. Suitable for pigment dispersion, filler incorporation, emulsification and dissolution across a wide range of chemical formulations.

  • Tip speed up to 25 m/s — efficient deagglomeration
  • Hydraulic lifting for multi-tank operation
  • Variable speed with frequency inverter control
  • Explosion-proof motor option for solvent-based products
  • Vacuum model available for bubble-sensitive formulations
  • Capacities: 50L to 5,000L vessels

Multi-Shaft Mixer

When product viscosity exceeds the capability of a single-shaft disperser, multi-shaft mixers combine two or three independently driven shafts in a single vessel — typically a slow-speed anchor or gate agitator for bulk movement, plus one or two high-speed disperser shafts for localised shear and dispersion. This combination handles viscosities from 50,000 cP to over 5,000,000 cP.

  • Dual-shaft: anchor agitator + high-speed disperser
  • Triple-shaft: anchor + disperser + homogeniser
  • Jacketed vessel for heating or cooling
  • Vacuum degassing capability
  • Handles paste-like materials up to 5,000,000 cP
  • Capacities: 20L to 3,000L
