Why an Explosion-Proof Motor Isn’t Optional on a Solvent-Based Line

Solvent-based paints, inks and resin systems release flammable vapor throughout the dispersing cycle, particularly during high-speed disc rotation when solvent is drawn into the vortex and atomized at the tank surface. A standard TEFC motor, junction box or push-button station is a potential ignition source in this environment — sparking contacts, hot motor surfaces and static discharge from ungrounded metal parts are all recognized ignition mechanisms in flammable-vapor atmospheres. This is why solvent-based dispersing lines require Ex-rated motors and Ex-rated control components as standard practice, not as an optional upgrade.

Hydraulic Lift Column → 1,000mm Stroke for Any Tank Height

The dispersion head raises and lowers on a hydraulic cylinder with 1,000mm of travel, letting the operator position the disc at the correct depth for each batch — deep enough to maintain a stable vortex, shallow enough to avoid splashing during the initial powder-wetting stage. Because lift height is hydraulic rather than fixed, the same disperser head can service multiple tank sizes without a separate mounting frame for each.

VFD Speed Control → Matching Tip Speed to a Thickening Batch

Disc tip speed — not motor rpm alone — determines shear intensity at the blade edge. As a batch thickens during dispersion, the operator reduces shaft speed via the VFD panel to hold the vortex depth and tip speed in the correct range for the material, rather than tearing the vortex apart or under-shearing a heavier load. The 0–970 rpm range on this unit covers deagglomeration of dry pigment at start-up through to high-viscosity paste dispersion at the end of the batch, without changing equipment.

Toothed Dispersion Disc → Deagglomeration and Pigment Wetting

The interchangeable saw-tooth disc creates alternating pressure and shear zones as it rotates, breaking down pigment agglomerates and wetting dry powder into the liquid vehicle far faster than low-speed paddle agitation. Disc diameter can be resized to the tank geometry and target tip speed without changing the motor or drivetrain.

Explosion-Proof Motor & Control Cabinet → Ex d IIB T4 Gb Rating

On the explosion-proof configuration, every electrical component exposed to the process area — motor enclosure, junction box, control cabinet, push-button station and ammeter — is rated Ex d IIB T4 Gb, suitable for Zone 1/2 hazardous locations as defined for flammable solvent vapor. Flameproof (Ex d) construction contains any internal spark or arc within the enclosure, preventing it from reaching the surrounding atmosphere.
